I Mursi

I Mursi sono un gruppo etnico dell’Etiopia, vicino al Mago Park. Vivono sulle rive del fiume Omo di pastorizia e agricoltura. La popolazione risulta essere di circa 8ooo individui. L’etnia è soprattutto nota per l’abitudine delle donne di applicare un piattello di terracotta nel labbro inferiore della bocca. Più il piattello labiale è grande (applicato spesso anche ai lobi delle orecchie) più la donna è importante e considerata.

Queste immagini le ho realizzate nel 1985 quando ancora i Mursi erano isolati : oggi esiste nei loro confronti un vero turismo intensivo che ne sta snaturando le origini. Per pochi soldi si fanno addobbare e disegnare il corpo per poi essere fotografati nelle foggie più incredibili. La mia vuole essere la testimonianza di come si presentavano prima dell’invasione di massa che ha rovinato la loro straordinaria spontaneità .

The Mursi

The Mursi are an Ethiopian ethnic group. They live of farming and agriculture near the Mago Park on the banks of the Omo River. With a population of approximately 8OOO individuals, their ethnicity is particularly known for the women’s habit to apply a clay plate in the lower lip of the mouth (often applied to their ear lobes). The larger is the labial plate the more important and considered is the woman.

These images were taken in 1985 when the Mursi were still isolated. Nowadays, an intensive form of tourism is distorting their origins. For little money you can make them decorate their body before being photographed in the most incredible fashions. Mine want to be the witness/evidence of what you had before the tourists’ invasion, which has ruined their extraordinary spontaneity.
